The Mirror.
Like mother, not like daughter.
Well, perhaps she is a lot like me. The me before she decided mirrors were the bane of her existence. As I mentioned previously, I used to like mirrors. There was always a silly friend on the other side, and she would copy my faces, wave back to me, and make laugh.
Colette found that same friend. She loves her mirror friend! Whenever she sees her, she tries to stop to check in on her, and at the very least for a little wave hello. Her mirror friend has been there from the beginning. From first glance, she decided never to betray her. I am amazed at their friendship!
Since the age of 2, you could catch Colette and her best friend playing dress up, applying makeup, trying new hairstyles, practicing smiles, approving outfits, or even having a conversation. Nothing has changed. She’s a sophomore in high school. One of those supposedly insecure teenagers. Yet, Colette remains close friends with the mirror. Sometimes she confuses her friends when she waves hello. They think she’s waving at them, but she’s actually excited to see her best friend looking back at her.
Considering my previous post, you may wonder how I feel about this relationship. My daughter having such a close connection with my nemesis. I adore it! I am so incredibly happy that she does not avoid mirrors, and she even actively seeks them out.
She’s actually kind of in your face about how much she loves her best friend. I suppose some people may get the wrong idea. And, I guess that’s their problem. Her best friend has helped her develop her own style, personality, and confidence. I mean, of course they have their little fights, but they make up after some space and deep breaths. I love how those feelings never take hold. She can always go back to loving her.
Maybe her healthy relationship will help me learn to let the mirror into my life little by little. She doesn’t have to worry though, I won’t ever be competing for her best friend’s attention.
